Photographer Sarah Bethea was investigating the depths of a glacier cave in southern Iceland when the positioning of the Sun coincidentally aligned with the cave entrance, causing an inner wall of the cave to take on a radiant amber-like appearance.
The photographer from Oregon had the opportunity to observe this extraordinary event in December 2017. It is believed that the Sun illuminates the glacier cave in this particular manner only once or twice per year.
"The sunlight striking the ice caused it to emanate a brief amber-like glow," Bethea recounts. "While I anticipated the beauty of these ice caves, I was genuinely taken aback. Nature never ceases to astonish."
